Catching up on 29029 Prep

Sorry for the long delay on updating my progress towards my June 26/27 29029 at Mount Rainier.  Super busy with launching a new company and being the officiant at Anders and Lauren's wedding! Generally my training has gone quite well!  Here is a monthly summary of 2026 vs 2025 and some comments:

1. My swim is going much better this year than last.  I had the usual May dip as that's the period where I transition from indoors to outdoors swimming--usually towards the end of the month.  Water has been a bit cooler this year, given our winter weather and of-course, we also had the wedding that cut into swim time.  Last year, Judy and I did Hadrian's Wall, so that really depressed 2025 May #s.  Anyways, I'm up about 50% ytd and now I'm back doing open water so feeling good about my swim!

2. My bike is still in maintenance mode with my focus on 29029 training.  I had a stronger May this year with no Hadrian's and so I'm roughly about where I was at this point last year--which isn't that good but it is what I can do given other priorities.

3. Walk/Run (hike/climb) is my main focus as I prepare for 29029 in about 2 weeks--very pleased with my progress and I just came off of 4 very big weeks post wedding so feeling pretty optimistic about my 29029 chances!

4. Have definitely sacrificed strength/flexibility training given the above--probably to my detriment!  Tried to get back at in the last part of May as my body seems to hold up better when I do.  Hope to add more in 2026 post 29029.

5. Total training time is relatively similar to 2025--certainly I'm at the far end of the bell curve on this and I'm maintaining motivation and avoiding injury, so all good!

These next two charts drill down on 29029 specific training:

The first is a Trailing 4-week average training miles and you can see that, especially with the last 4 weeks, I've been able to bank more training volume in 26 than in 25.  The second are essentially bell curves for the two years and the greater consistency of 2026 is apparent as well as the general shift towards more weekly volume.

Net/Net, even though I'm a bit "smoked" right now, I think I'm ready and hope to get 1 or 2 more big sessions in before game time!

Onwards and upwards!
